Alex Degabriele shines in the Czech Republic

Last week, our exceptional U/14 Malta Champion, Alex Degabriele, showcased his immense talent and represented Malta with pride in one of Europe’s most esteemed tournaments – The European Championships. Teaming up with the talented Maya Glumac, they embarked on a journey to compete against the best players from each participating country in the picturesque city of Most, Czech Republic.

Main Draw

In the main draw, Alex faced a formidable opponent, Axel Eriksson from Finland, in a hard-fought match that stretched over three sets. Despite a valiant effort, Alex succumbed to Eriksson, with a final score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. However, undeterred by this setback, Alex demonstrated resilience and determination as he entered the consolation draw.

Consolation Draw

The consolation draw proved to be a turning point for Alex’s campaign. He delivered a remarkable performance in the first round against Theodoros Mitsakos, the 70th-ranked player in Europe from Greece. The match was a grueling battle, with Alex emerging victorious with an impressive score of 2-4, 4-2, 4-1. This outstanding win propelled Alex’s confidence to new heights.

Continuing his stellar performance, Alex advanced to the second round of the consolation draw, where he faced Mihail Brovinschi, ranked 152 in Europe from Moldova. Once again, Alex exhibited his tenacity and skill, prevailing over Brovinschi in a thrilling encounter with a score of 3-5, 5-3, 4-1. The victory showcased Alex’s ability to rise to the occasion and overcome tough challenges.

Moving into the quarterfinals, Alex encountered yet another formidable opponent, Jan Kobierski from Austria. Although the match was closely contested, Alex fell short, ultimately losing with a score of 4-1, 5-4(2). Despite the outcome, Alex’s commendable performance throughout the tournament was a testament to his dedication and talent.

This week of tennis amidst Europe’s finest players was truly exceptional. Alex’s remarkable achievement of defeating a top-100 player filled us with immense pride.
